The culprit behind unreliable marine electrical systems is standard automotive cable. It’s simply not designed to resist the harsh marine environment and salt water atmosphere. Internal copper conductors turn black, brittle and break down (leading to fire). Our Lifetime UL1426 boat cable features fully tinned conductors to prevent corrosion. Ultra fine stranding makes our cable extremely flexible, aiding its installation and resistance to vibration. Insulation resistant to oil, acid, UV light, fuel and most chemicals. Under direct flame (even from a blow torch) insulation will simply form a crust to prevent the cable short circuiting (self extinguishing).

To ensure a reliable and safe system, it is essential that cabling is carefully sized. This guide makes this quick and easy to do. The tables below provide sizing at aglance. Measure from your power source to the load and back again to obtain total circuit length (power source could be a switch panel, main bus bar or battery switch). Critical items(eg nav lights, bilge pump, instruments etc) use 3% voltage drop. For non-critical loads (eg fridge, lights etc), use 10%. If you cannot determine the right cable from the charts, use the calculation in the blue box (right). Work out the CM value and read off against the chart on the right. For example, take a 12V 40 ft long circuit, driving an 18A non-critical load (Note: Length is calculated always in feet (divide metres by 0.3048): 10.75 x 18 x 40 = 7740 divide by 1.2 = 6450. The nearest cable on the chart is 12AWG (3mm2).
